Advocare and Herbalife are both meal replacement shakes that have found themselves heavily promoted in the market, especially in the fitness area. And, following the heavy marketing, both Advocare and Herbalife have become widely used by people who want to lose some body weight. However, such kind of product is always a subject to biased reviews and marketing, which is why it can be pretty difficult to find an honest comparison between these two items. Below, we will try to put these two meal replacement shakes against each other in order to determine which one is better.
Effects and Benefits
These two products are basically similar in terms of effects and benefits. Both Advocare and Herbalife function as meal replacement shakes; that is, you consume the shake as a replacement to a meal. Both Advocare and Herbalife claim to be able to provide you just enough nutrients, neither too high nor too low. This way, they can control your nutrient absorption and prevent your body from absorbing too many calories, hence preventing fatness. In addition, both Advocare and Herbalife also control your appetite. They do so by using fiber. They fill your digestion tract with fiber to make you feel full for a longer time. By not getting hungry as often as before, you will be able to control your eating habit better and stop yourself from consuming too many calories. (See also: Xyngular vs Advocare)
Not exactly related to the effects and benefits, but price is still a factor to consider. So, it is worth knowing that Advocare is usually more expensive than Herbalife. The price difference is quite significant. We may find the fact that these products are sold via MLM (Multi-Level Marketing) as annoying. Many of the so-called “distributors” actually don’t know better than you about nutrition. However, you can also get these products via online stores.
Calories and Carbohydrates
Why do you eat so many calories from your meal replacement shake, if your purpose is to limit your calorie intake? A high calorie number is rather counter-intuitive if you are trying to lose some body weight. Therefore, we have to tell you that Advocare contains more calories and carbohydrates than Herbalife. Advocare has 220 calories per serving and 24 grams of carbs, while Herbalife has only 90 calories per serving and 13 grams of carbs. So, in general, Herbalife can actually be more effective for losing weight. Advocare can be an alternative if you find yourself feeling way too weak even for just daily activities – a sign that your body is not getting sufficient energy.
Both shakes taste good and pleasant, apparently because they both still contain considerable amounts of sugar. Their sugar levels are still lower than juices, though. But let us note that Advocare contains 12 grams of sugar and Herbalife has 9 grams of sugar. Both products still use sucralose, which is an artificial sweetener. However, contrary to the popular belief, you actually don’t need to worry very much about sucralose. It has been accepted as safe by experts and food safety regulatory bodies including the FDA. In fact, sucralose can be a good alternative to sugar for weight-loss purposes because it is non-caloric.
Fiber is the key ingredient to a meal replacement shake’s power to control appetite. It is fiber that will fill your digestion tract and make you feel full, thus preventing you from getting hungry and eating. Fiber has become the recommended choice for losing weight. This time, Advocare actually has a better edge than Herbalife for containing more fiber. Advocare has 6 grams of fiber per serving, as opposed to Herbalife’s 3 grams per serving. So, Advocare may be able to control your appetite better than Herbalife. Fiber is also able to maintain the health of the digestion system and to treat irregularity.
This is perhaps the strongest aspect of Advocare. Compared to Herbalife, it has significantly higher protein levels. Advocare has 24 grams of protein per serving. On the other hand, Herbalife only has 9 grams of protein. Protein is obviously an important nutrient needed by the body, primarily for bodily functions and building and repairing cells, but that’s not the only thing. When you are cutting down your carb intake, protein becomes your source of power. So, the lack of protein in a low-carb diet may make you feel incredibly weak. Some users have reported that they crash down in late afternoon when using Herbalife, but can keep going for a full day when using Advocare.
Both Advocare and Herbalife do contain soy. This is not necessarily a bad thing, unless if you have an allergy to soy. If you are allergic or sensitive to soy, you definitely should stay away from these products. Otherwise, there is no real reason to be afraid of soy.
Both products also contain considerable amounts of sodium. While sodium is indeed a mineral needed by human body, a very high sodium level is also not good. Herbalife has a slightly higher sodium level with 95 mg, whereas Advocare has 80 mg sodium. These numbers are not incredibly high to be really concerned, but, if you also want to cut down your sodium intake, you may want to find an alternative meal replacement shake.
Other nutrition levels, such as vitamins and minerals, are more-or-less similar between Advocare and Herbalife. They do contain a variety of vitamins and minerals to support your health and fitness.
Last but not least, you may want to know about the available flavor choices provided by these products. Advocare offers five flavor choices, consisting of vanilla, chocolate, berry, chocolate mocha, and chocolate peanut butter. On the other hand, Herbalife comes with six flavor choices, which are vanilla, dutch chocolate, café latte, cookies n cream, wild berry, and the allergen-free vanilla version.
Herbalife is generally more recommended because it has lower levels of calories, carbs, and sugars. You may need to take some additional protein intake with Herbalife. However, if you need more calories for your daily activities, you should choose Advocare.
