Orlistat vs Phentermine

Orlistat
Orlistat, also known as tetrahydrolipstatin, is a drug designed to treat obesity. Marketed as a prescription drug under various brands in countries all around the world, it primarily functions to prevent the absorption of fats from the human diet by acting as an inhibitor of the lipase enzyme. As the effect, it also reduces your calorie intake. It is intended to be used in conjunction with a supervised reduced-calorie diet.

Orlistat

Orlistat is derived from lipstatin, which is a potent natural inhibitor to pancreatic lipases acquired from the Streptomyces toxytricini bacterium. Orlistat is chosen over lipstatin because it is simpler and more stable. Orlistat works by inhibiting gastric and pancreatic lipases so that the enzymes won’t be able to break down complex fat molecules from the food into the absorbable free fatty acids. Studies show that it is able to reduce weight up to 3 kilograms within a year. Side effects may include steatorrhea (oily, loose stools).

Phentermine
Phentermine, the short for phenyl- tertiary-butylamine, is psychostimulant drug similar to amphetamine. It primarily functions as an appetite suppressant. It is available in various brands and is approved worldwide, including by USA’s FDA. It works by affecting the neuron system, reducing the hunger perception so that consumers don’t easily get hungry.

Phentermine

Currently, it is being studied in combination with other medications for obesity. As it only reduces and suppresses your appetite, it neither directly prevents your body from absorbing fats nor helps to break down the accumulated fats of the body. Side effects may include headaches, rash, agitation, and hypertension.

Bottom Lines
Between Orlistat and Phentermine, we recommend you to choose Orlistat because it directly addresses the source of the problem, fats. It prevents your body from absorbing too much fat, as opposed to Phentermine that only reduces appetite. Nevertheless, you still need to control your food intake!
